How to make Papier Mache

Papier mache paste

I'm going to show you several ways on how to make Papier Mache paste. Papier mache means 'chewed paper' in French and papier mache paste is the mixture that you bind with the paper (commonly newspaper) to make your sculptures and creations.

It is a great kids craft and there is just so much you can do with it.

At a kids party it is very popular these days to have a pinata and they are very easy to make using papier mache. Below you will find several recipes showing you how to make Papier Mache. Take your pick!

As with all the recipes, once you have made the papier mache paste, the mixture is then combined with newspaper to create and mould your sculpture such as making your own pinata.

Flour Papier Mache Paste Recipe - no cook recipe

What you need :
One part plain white flour to two parts cold tap water
2 tablespoons salt (helps to prevent mould)

Method :
Place the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl and gradually mix in the water. Keep stirring with a large spoon until the paper mache is the required consistency. It should be smooth and thick enough so that it falls gently off the spoon.

Flour Papier Mache Recipe - cooked recipe

What you need :
6 cups water
1/4 cup plain white flour

Method :
In a saucepan boil 5 cups of the water. Gradually mix the remaining cup of water with the flour, stirring well to remove any lumps. Then add the flour mix to the boiling water and stir. Let it simmer for a couple of minutes or until the mixture thickens. Allow to completely cool before using.

Wallpaper papier mache recipe

What you need :
Wallpaper glue

Method :
Follow the manufacturers instructions for making up the glue. Vary the amount of water if you want a slightly thicker or thinner consistency.

I like this recipe best as it keeps well in an air tight jar for 3-4 days or up to a week in the fridge. Plus it contains a fungicide to stop the glue going mouldy.

Note: Don't let children lick their fingers because of the fungicide
