Your invitations could go something like this:

It would be purrfect if you could hop on over to my house
Party details…..

  • Cut out pictures of pets from old magazines and glue to plain, blank cards. Draw speech bubbles and have the animals invite the kids to the party.
  • Make the card in the shape of a kennel. Make flaps where the door is and write the pet party instructions inside
  • Buy some small dog bones or rubber bones and wrap the party invite around the shaft (long bit of the bone). Tie with a red ribbon.
  • On the front of plain card draw animal foot prints that lead to the pet party instructions on the other side.
  • For younger kids, ask them to bring their favourite cuddly animal toy. Older kids could come dressed as their favourite pet.

    * Pet party Costumes *

    If the kids are coming dressed as pets, organize a fashion pet show. Some kids won't have costumes so have some face paints at the ready or animal masks so that they don't feel left out. Give prizes for categories such as: most creative, cutest, fuzziest, cheekiest and so on. Hand out rosettes for prizes and make sure that everyone gets one. Pets are sensitive creatures!!

    For some good value pet costumes try the following :

    Jokers Masquerade (UK store)
    Buy Costumes (US store)

    * Pet Party Decorations *

  • Place lots of stuffed animals around the party area.
  • Have dad/uncle/grandad dress up as a big bear and he can be the "Bear Bouncer" who greets the kids at the door.
  • Put on background animal party music or animal songs.
  • Cut out some large paw prints and have them lead up to your front door.
  • Create a center piece of a pet pound using items such as a large cardboard box, football net, open shelves. Buy some small cuddly toy pets and put them in the pound. Give each pet a name and write these on individual pieces of paper along with details of date of birth, character, sex etc and place in a large dog bowl. At the end of the party each guest can pick out a piece of paper and they get to keep the cuddly pet that matches it.
  • How about a 55" high cardboard doghouse which you can color and paint to match the party colors.

    * Pet Party Games *

  • Animal Antics Have the kids sit in a circle and one at a time they have to mime an animal. The other kids have to guess what they are.
  • Animal pop Buy some small plastic animals and insert into a deflated balloon. Blow the balloon up and tie. Rig up a balloon net and put all the balloons in it. Get the kids into a circle and then let the net go. The kids have to use their feet to pop the balloons and release the animal inside which they get to keep.
  • Pet Pairs Glue pictures of pets onto strong card. When dry, cut out and then cut each pet in half. Give each child one half of several pets and hide the rest in the house or garden. The kids’ mission is then to find their other pet half. First one to finish gets a pet prize.
  • Dig a bone Fill a large sand box with small dog bones. The kids then have to dig with their hands to see who can find the most bones. If you haven’t got a sandbox, fill a large plastic paddling pool with builders sand.
  • Bunny Hops Split the kids into 2 teams and give each team a large sack. Each team member must get into the sack and hop across to a bucket filled with carrots. They must pick up a carrot using only their mouth and hop back to their team. First team to get all their carrots is the declared the ‘Bounciest Bunnies’.
  • Scaredy Cat As you know cats are very agile creatures, but are the kids as well?! Set up an obstacle course using buckets, low stools, planks of wood or whatever you think is appropriate. One child is the cat and his/her aim is to complete the obstacle course without falling off and in the quickest time possible. The other kids are ferocious dogs and they must bark and jump up at the cat but are not allowed to touch him/her.
  • Piñata Having a piñata is always a great success at kids parties. For some inspiring pet party piñatas, take a look at:
