Save the World party theme
Together we shall save the world!
The world is a fragile place and the more we abuse it the more it becomes destroyed. In this Save the world party theme, the kids become heroes as they battle to save our planet and at the same time they learn about the environment, nature and how to value it.
You could either stick to one aspect of saving the world such as nature, planets, animals, pollution etc or you could do the whole shebang. Choose something that will grab the attention of the kids.
So let's get going and let's save our planet ….

Get the kids to come dressed as scientists, explorers or naturalists. Think of binoculars, pith helmets, khaki clothes, lab coats. For those who don't have a costume have a couple of old men's white shirts to hand so they can look like scientists.

* Save the World Party Decorations *
Make as much as you can out of recyclable material – paper, cardboard, boxes, tin cans etc
You could either go green and use that as your theme color or go for all the colors of the rainbow and all the bright colors of nature.
Make a centerpiece of a large inflatable globe which you can suspend form the ceiling
Large inflatable globe (UK store)
Decorate the party room with posters of the earth, the stars, nature or the environment
Hang stars around the room and make a large wall frieze showing the different planets. (Don't label the planets yet as the frieze can be used in a game later). See party games BELOW
You could even erect this superb inflatable solar system (US store)

* Save the World party food *
My ideal would be to serve as much as you can that is directly from nature and that means vegetables and fruit!! However I am sure that the kids might have different ideas so the key is to make the food look fun and intersting, and of course tasty.
Cover the table with a green table cloth. Dot dried flowers and leaves in between the food dishes. Serve food in containers made from natural or recyclable materials such as wooden salad bowl, scooped out water melon or grapefruit, wicker baskets lined with brown recyclable paper.
Veggie Platter Raw carrots, cucumber, carrot wheels, cauliflower florets, cherry tomatoes. Provide a mayonnaise dip.
Yoghurt Bonanza Yoghurt topped with nuts (be aware of allergies), and dried or fresh fruit
Planet Shakes Make a milk shake using their favourite fruits
Popcorn Stars Caramel or butter covered popcorn. Pile in a big bowl or if you have the energy, thread pieces together on a sting necklace.
Flower Power Cookies Buy or make plain cookies and cover with frosting. Add sugar past flowers or design your own with sprinkles.
House of straw Cheese straws piled high and made with wholemeal flour
Litter bugs Fruit gum insects
Earth Cake Prepare a basic chocolate cake using a packet cake mix or my all-in-one cake recipe. If you have one, use a pudding mold to give the cake a roundish shape.
Decorate the cake centred around your main Save the world theme or your child's preferences. It could be covered in sugar or real edible flowers or maybe frosted to resemble the earth or moon. How about covered in brown frosting to resemble the soil and with little gummy creatures stuck all around.

Tiny terrarium Give each child a clear soda pop bottle of which you have cut of the top half. Let them layer small rocks, sand and earth in the bottom to resemble the earth's layers. Then top with real plant seeds or small artificial plastic flowers and insects.
Sand flowers Draw a large flower on craft paper and cover individual parts with glue. Sprinkle on coloured sand bought from craft stores or by making your own with sand mixed with crushed up coloured chalk.
Mr or Mrs Grasshead
You will need :
Packet of grass seed
Old pantyhose
Potting soil
Empty yoghurt pots
Stick on eyes and felt scraps
Glue
What to do:
Cut off about 6" of the pantyhose from the feet. Fill with a dessertspoon of grass seed and then top with a couple of tablespoons of potting soil. Knot the open end making sure that you leave a little tail. Have the kids decorate the grass head with stick on eyes and felt scraps making sure that the grass seed end is at the top as that will be the hair. Half fill the yoghurt pot with water and stand Mr. Grasshead in the pot so that the knotted tail is inserted in the water. Let the kids take it home and after a few days they should see some hair (grass) growing which they can then trim or style to their hearts content.

Animal tracks
In advance make a photocopy of a page of animal footprints. You can download footprint images here. See who can recognise and name the most footprints correctly.
Earth, water, air and fire
One person is nominated as Mother/Father Nature and the other kids stand in a circle. Mother Nature stands in the centre and holds a large inflatable globe. She then throws it to one person and says either "Earth", "Water", "Air" or "Fire". That person has 10 seconds to name either an animal (earth), fish (water), bird (air) but must keep silent for fire. If they don't manage it they get a stone. Once you have 3 stones you are out of the game. The globe then gets thrown to another person. The same animal, bird of fish cannot be repeated in the same game.
Name that planet
Make a large wall muriel showing the different planets. Give each child individual pieces of paper with the names of the planets on plus the child's name. Pop a small blob of bluetak on the back. Get the kids to place their planet names where they think that they should go. One with the most correct answers is named "Mr. or Mrs. Cosmos".
Nature hunt
Either play as individuals or in teams. Give each team/player a list of nature items such as pine cone, seed pod, red leaf and a brown paper bag to collect their goodies. Set a time limit and see who can be the first to collect all the items on their list.
Save the wild animals
For this game you need either quite a large garden with lots of nooks and crannies or you could go to your local park. Split the kids into teams and tell them that their mission is to save the wild animals who are trapped in the forest. Give each team a list of facts and ways that they could help save the earth and each of these will lead them to a wild animal. These could be small plastic animals. As an example one instruction could be "Never throw your litter on the ground" and so they need to search for some litter where you will have hidden an animal. Another could be "Recycle and cycle" which could lead them either to a box of recyclable materials or to the bike shed. Or you could have "Don't pick flowers or keep wild creatures for pets... leave plants and animals where you find them" which could lead them to a flower bed. "Your house is your home just as a nest is a birds home" could lead them to a bird house or nest that you have made. "Don't be a driip" could lead them to a tap.

Did you know?...... The average person in the United States uses 80 to 100 gallons of water each day. During medieval times a person used only 5 gallons per day. Most of the world's people must walk at least 3 hours to fetch water. If you turned off that dripping tap you would save the world up to 2,000 gallons of water a year. Also….Over 100,000 marine animals die every year from entanglement in plastic products dumped in the sea.
