#2 Skewered Turkish Meatballs (makes about 16-20 small)
Instead of the usual sausages on sticks, why not try these meatballs which are much easier to prepare than you think.
Ingredients:
1 small onion; 1 clove garlic; 450g minced lamb; a few fresh mint leaves, finely chopped; 1 teaspoon ground allspice; 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon; salt and pepper; vegetable oil for grilling; wooden skewers.
Method:
- Peel the onion and chop it finely – small kids often don't like big onion pieces.
- Peel and crush the garlic and then place the onion, garlic and minced lamb in a large mixing bowl.
- Sprinkle the chopped mint leaves, spices and seasonings over the lamb and mix in well.
- Using your hands, divide the mixture into 16-20 equal portions and mould into sausage shapes around the skewers. (Note: To prevent the skewers from burning, soak them in water first for 30 minutes before putting them under the grill or BBQ).
- Brush the meatballs with oil and place under the grill or BBQ for 8-10 minutes, turning them regularly until they are brown all over.
- Serve as they are or with a dipping sauce.

#3 Mini cheese, onion and olive scones (makes about 25)
I in fact initially made these for an adult party, but the kids seemed to like them so much that now I often cook them for kid's parties as well. They are meant to have a slightly piquant bite but for kids you might want to omit the mustard and pepper.
Ingredients:
175g self-raising flour; 1 medium onion, diced small; 1 tablespoon olive oil; ½ teaspoon salt; ½ teaspoon mustard powder(optional); ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional); freshly milled black pepper; 25g butter; 40g Parmesan cheese, grated; 40g strong cheddar cheese, grated; 2-3 tablespoons milk; 1 medium egg; 6 black olives, stoned and chopped.
Method:
- Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/ gas mark 6. Lightly flour a large baking sheet.
- Fry the onion in the oil for 5-6 minutes until it's turned a nice caramel colour. Transfer the onion to a plate to cool.
- Sift flour, salt, mustard and pepper (if using) into a large mixing bowl. Rub in the butter and then add the cooled onion, olives and 2/3 of the grated cheeses. Mix well with a round edged knife.
- Beat the egg and pour this in, still mixing with the knife. When sufficiently blended, use your hands to form a soft dough, adding some milk if necessary.
- Place the dough on a floured surface and knead till smooth. Roll out to about 2cm thick and then cut into rounds using a 3cm plain cutter. NB If the dough is sticking to the cutter, flour the cutter regularly.
- Place the scones on the baking sheet, brush with milk and sprinkle on the remaining grated cheeses.
- Bake near the top of the oven for 10-12 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
NB These are best served slightly warm, however, they freeze superbly once cooked. Just remove from the freezer when you want them and re-heat in a hot oven for about 4 minutes before serving. They can be eaten as they are or you could split them horizontally and add a cheesy spread topping.

#4 Pitta Pockets
The beauty of these is that you can fill them with whatever you wish and they are easy for kids to hold especially if you buy the smaller pitta breads.
Ingredients:
1 or 2 mini pitta breads per person; suggested fillings: humus, sliced cucumber, sliced tomato, sliced cold chicken, sausages, hard cheese, Turkish meatballs , cheese, mashed hard boiled egg with mayonnaise or whatever you and the kids like.
Method:
- Assemble and prepare the ingredients of your choice.
- Warm the pitta breads under the grill for 1 minute on each side.
- Slit them open and pack with the filling.
NB For older kids you could have the fillings laid separately on the table and they could then make their own pitta pockets.

#5 Tomato Bouncers
If your kids like tomatoes then these are great as a finger food. They look nice too when made so always catch the kids attention.
Ingredients:
Small cherry tomatoes; cream cheese; seasoning; single cream; finely chopped fresh chives.
Method:
- Carefully slice a thin wedge off the bottom of each tomato. This is to help them stand upright on the plate.
- Slice a slightly bigger wedge off the stalk end of each tomato
- Using a small coffee spoon or paring knife, scrape out the inside of the tomatoes.
- Mash the cream cheese with a fork, adding a bit of cream if the mixture is very stiff. Add the chopped chives and seasoning and mix well.
- Using an icing bag with a fairly wide star nozzle, fill each tomato with the cream cheese filling.
