Blow an Egg

How to blow an egg for decorating

When I was younger, I was always so impressed when watching someone blow an egg as I always thought it was really difficult and messy. Now I know better - it is simple, easy and not slimy at all.

Blown eggs are great for using as an EASTER PARTY craft and they can be painted and decorated as you like. If you hide the eggs on Easter morning, they won't be very messy if they accidentally get broken.

The kids will have a lot of fun blowing the eggs out through the shell. You can video tape them and watch it later when they have finished decorating the eggs.

You might want the kid's to do this activity at the kitchen table or put newspaper on the floor and have them do it there, as it can get a bit messy sometimes.

Skill: Easy

What You Will Need

  • Egg (uncooked)
  • Egg Cup
  • Darning needle
  • Bowl

How to Blow an Egg

blow out an egg
  1. Wash and dry the egg. Top tip: Choose white eggs if you are going to paint them.
  2. Place the egg in an egg cup. This is just to help it stay still.
  3. Using a darning needle, carefully puncture a small hole at the pointed end of the egg (A).
  4. Puncture another slightly larger hole at the other end of the egg (B), making sure that you puncture the yolk as well.
  5. Hold the egg over a bowl and blow through the small hole until you have expelled all of the white and the yolk. You might have to blow quite hard depending on how big the holes are. I also find that the colder the egg the harder it is to blow the contents out.
  6. Carefully wash the egg shell and dry thoroughly before you decorate them.
  7. To stop the eggs from breaking, store them in an egg carton until you want to use them or have the kids make paper animal baskets first and they can put the eggs in them to store.
