Cheese Straws Recipe

Cheese straws are great finger food for kid's parties.

I love cheese straws. They were one of the first things I ever made at school in cooking class and I have been hooked ever since.

They are a great party food idea as kids love to eat with their hands and on the move. These homemade treats are just perfect for that.

This recipe is a bit of a cheats recipe but delicious all the same. It uses ready made pastry which can be just as good as homemade and is ready in minutes.

The kids can even help make them just be sure to keep them back from the oven.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 10-12 minutes
Makes about 15-20

Equipment: Rolling pin, baking tray, knife, cheese grater

  • 12 ozs. ready to roll Puff pastry
  • Grated Parmesan cheese or other strong cheese
  • Flour for rolling
  • Salt
  • Paprika

How to Make Cheese Straws

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 F.
  2. Lightly flour your work surface and unroll the pastry.
  3. Sprinkle on a generous handful of cheese and then fold the pastry in half.
  4. Roll the pastry so it is 1/8 in thick.
  5. Sprinkle on more cheese and then very lightly press it down with your hand or the rolling pin so that it sticks to the pastry.
  6. Cut the pastry into thin strips roughly 3 inches long and 1/4 inch wide.
  7. Carefully twist each strip a few times and then lay on the baking sheet. Alternatively you could roll them up if that is easier so that they look like wheels.
  8. Optional: Sprinkle with a little salt and paprika.
  9. Cook in the center of the oven for 12 – 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Leave to cool, and then pop them in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Party Food Cook Books

I have found it so hard to find just one cook book dedicated to kid's savory party food. Most have lots of extra bits about planning and decorating that I don't necessarily want.

So I have done a bit of searching and come up with the 3 that I consider the best in terms of kid's party food ideas. Take your pick.
