    Christmas craft ideas for the tree

    * Fabric Angels *

    Preparation :

  • Oddments of fabric

  • Two different sized round plates for tracing around

  • Thread / string

  • Glitter glue

  • Small polystyrene ball or cotton wool ball

  • Colored or sparkly beads

  • Glue

  • Black marker pen

  • Making your angel :

    1. Cut out two different sized circles of fabric using the plates as a template. The larger circle will form the body of the angel and the smaller one will form the wings. Put some glitter glue all around the edge of both circles and allow to dry.

    2. Place a polystyrene or cotton ball in the center of the large circle. Draw the material up and tie it with the thread or string – this is the angel head and body.

    3. Using the smaller circle, fold it into a concertina (fan) shape and then tie a piece of thread in the middle – this will be the angels wings. Then tie the wings around neck of the body using some colored ribbon and so that it forms a pretty bow.

    4. Glue some colored or sparkly beads around the head of the angel to from a halo and draw on a simple face using the black marker pen.

    5. Attach a small loop of thread to the back of the angel and hang her on your tree.

    * Glitter Balls *

    Preparation :

  • Polystyrene balls of different sizes

  • Glitter

  • PVA glue

  • Toothpick or pin

  • Paper clip or thin wire

  • Colored ribbon

  • Making your Glitter balls :

    1. Stick a toothpick or pin into one of the polystyrene balls and cover the ball with a thin layer of glue.

    2. Place the glitter in a bowl and then carefully remove the pin and place the ball in the glitter. Holding the bowl, carefully tip it so the ball gets to roll about and to get covered in glitter.

    3. When full coated, remove from the bowl using the pin or toothpick and allow to dry fully – a couple of hours should be fine.

    4. Uncurl a paper clip or use the wire and form it into a thin 'U' shape. Stick both ends of the 'U' into the top of the ball so that the curved end of the wire is just sticking out of the ball in a loop shape.

    5. Thread a piece of colored ribbon through the wire loop, tie a bow and hang on the tree.

    * Everlasting Candles *

    Preparation :

  • Paper towel tubes

  • Craft knife

  • Spray metallic paint – gold, red, green

  • Bits and bobs to decorate the candle e.g. coloured sequins, stickers, buttons,

  • Glue

  • Ribbon

  • Craft paper

  • Scissors

  • Coloured felt pens

  • Making your everlasting candles :

    1. Using the craft knife, cut the cardboard paper towel tubes into different lengths.

    2. Spray paint with the metallic paint.

    3. When fully dry, decorate with your bits and bobs and glue a colored ribbon round the middle

    4. For the flame, cut out a round circle from the craft paper which is the same size as the circumference of the candle. Spray paint it the same color as the candle and then when dry, make a small slit in the center about 1" and glue it carefully to the top of the candle.

    5. Make the flame by cutting out a flame shape from the craft paper but make sure that at the bottom of the flame you have allowed a small tab which you will insert in the slit fo the candle top. Color the flame in yellow and orange and then insert it into the candle.

    6. Make a candle base out of card, decorate it and then glue the finished candle to it. This will stop the candle from toppling over.

    7. My kids made a selection of different sized candles and we grouped them all together near some real candles and it looked really stunning.

    * Stained glass plate/glass *

    My kids each made one of these for their grandparents and they looked absolutely stunning.

    Preparation:

  • Glass plate/glass

  • Colored glass paint and brush

  • Gold glass outliner

  • White paper

  • Double sided sticky tape

  • Pencil

  • Making a stained glass plate :

    1. Place your plate on the white paper and draw round the diameter.

    2. Next plan your design and draw it in pencil on the paper.

    3. Using double sided tape, stick the paper to the inside of the plate with the design facing downwards. When you turn the plate over, you should be able to see your design through the bottom of the glass plate.

    4. Using the gold glass outliner, paint the outline of your design onto your plate and allow to fully dry.

    5. Now use the glass paint to fill in your design and again allow to dry fully.

    6. Read the manufacturers paint instructions about how to set the paint and whether it can go in a dish washer.

    * Christmas Box *

    Ellie my daughter made one of these and we now use it to store our Christmas baubles.

    Preparation :

  • Sturdy cardboard box – shoe box or wooden cigar box are ideal

  • Old Christmas cards or wrapping paper

  • Glue

  • Sticky back plastic

  • Scissors

  • Making your Christmas Box :

    1. Cut out various pictures from the cards or wrapping paper. Vary the sizes and shapes.

    2. Place the pictures randomly on the box so that they overlap slightly and no gaps are showing. When you are happy with your design, glue each picture and set in place.

    3. To protect the box, cover it in sticky back plastic or alternatively you could use a clear varnish.

    * Christmas Pot *

    Preparation :

  • Clay flower pot and saucer

  • Acyclic paint and brush

  • Rubber band

  • PVA glue to seal the pot

  • Poinsettia

  • Making your Christmas pot :

    1. Mix together three parts PVA glue with one party water. Brush all over the flower pot and saucer and leave to dry. This helps to seal the pot and to give it a waterproof surface.

    2. Paint the outside of the pot and its inner rim and the outside of the saucer in your chosen color. Leave to dry and then repeat.

    3. Now paint the pot in your chosen design. For example you could put white snowflakes on a blue base or green Christmas trees on a red base. TIP: if you want to paint on horizontal bands, place the rubber band around the pot and use that as a marker for painting.

    4. When you have finished painting and it is fully dry, paint the pot and saucer again with a mixture of PVA glue and water as you used in step 1.

    5. Place a poinsettia in the pot and you have a special gift for someone.
