Mad Scientist party theme

Boil and bubble
here comes trouble
in this mad scientist party theme

This is a party with a difference that will thrill and delight all those budding scientists out there. All kids love to experiment as it is all part of growing up and what better way to do it than with a mad scientist party that will have them tasting, smelling and concocting a lab full of fun.

* Party invitations
* Costumes
* Decorations
* Food
* Activities
* Games
* Favours

*Party Invitations *

  • Write the party details on white card and using a white crayon. Get the kids to color over the invite with a colored crayon or water based paint to reveal the message.
  • Using white card, make the invites in the shape of a white lab coat. Write on the instructions and then stick another lab coat on top, but just gluing it at the shoulders. On the top lab coat write the name of the child and smudge coloured paint all over it.

  • * Mad Scientist Costumes *

  • Buy some men's white shirts at a thrift store and use as lab coats. Write scientist names on the top pocket. E.g. Professor Pete, Dr. David, Mad Mark, Freddy Frankenstein.
  • If you can get hold of passport sized photos of the kids in advance, doctor them a bit by drawing on glasses and spiky hair. Glue them to some cad and write their names underneath. These can then be handed out as their ID when the arrive. If you can't get photos, just draw or print off some cartoon faces.
  • Give out some goofy glasses to the kids as they arrive.
  • Spray washable coloured hair spray on their hair and get it to stick up using hair gel or hair spray. Take Polaroid pictures of the kids and give them as take home gifts.
  • Get an adult to dress up as a mad scientist and s/he can talk the kids through the experiments.

  • Jokers Masquerade (UK store)
    A great party costume store with lots of choice.

    Party Delights (UK store)

    Have a good selection of fancy dress accessories and body parts. These are a bit gory so will be more suited to older kids.

    Buy Costumes (US store) have very realistic Einstein wigs and props. Check out their Halloween section for body parts and other scientific looking bits and bobs.

    * Mad Scientist Party Decorations *

    I would suggest making one room/area into the lab. It is much easier to decorate and will contain the mess.

  • On the entrance to your house put up some danger tape and a notice warning that only scientists may enter the"Secret Science Lab Zone".
  • Fill lots of different shaped jars with coloured water and rubber body parts and dot around the table.
  • If you can get hold of a dry ice machine, that can make a stunning table centre piece.
  • Use a coloured globe light to give the room an eerie appearance or just place coloured light bulbs in your ordinary lamps.
  • Using black construction paper, cut out large question marks, magnifying glasses and mathematical formulas. Stick these around the room.
  • Set up a large chalk board and write on it the recipes for the experiments that you are going to do (see mad scientist activities below).
  • Stick up posters of famous scientists around the room with a small caption underneath of why they are famous.
  • Have a look at the following sites for mad scientist decorations:

    Silly Jokes (UK store) Great for silly and fun things such as cardboard skeletons and body parts.

    ShindigZ by Stumps Shindigz (US store) is and party outlet store with a huge selection of party items including a smoking cauldron. They also have a gory looking brain gelatin mould

    * Mad Scientist party food *

  • Magnifying glass cake Make the cake in the shape of a magnifying glass by making one round and one oblong cake. Attach together and cover with black icing with a circular white area in the middle. Either buy a packet cake mixture or you can use my ultra simple all in one cake recipe
  • Serve the food in glass bowls and give them names such as 'Electronic Chips', 'Bubble Brew', 'Magnetic Munchers'.
  • Serve different coloured drinks in clear cups and use whirly straws.

    * Mad Scientist Party activities *

  • Slime All kids love anything gooey that can slip through their fingers so why not make some really gooey slime. Make sure that you have sime plastic cups to put it in for them to take home afterwards. Slime recipe
  • Erupting volcano. Make a volcano erupt before their very eyes. Fill a paddling pool or sandpit with lots of slightly moist sand. Get the kids to each make a volcano sand mound with a hole in the centre. Place a small disposable cup in the hole, put in 1 tablespoon of baking soda plus 2 tablespoons of water in order to make it dissolve. Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to which you have added a few drops of red food colouring, then watch it erupt! You can repeat the activity over and over again.
  • Giant Bubbles. Make mega bubbles using this fabulous bubble recipe and you will have happy kids for hours!
  • Osmotic Celery. Cut celery stalks and set them in glasses of tinted water. The stalks will absorb the colour and then the kids can eat them!
  • Rocket launch. Fill a small plastic film canister (the white ones work best) with one teaspoon of water. Quickly add one Alka-Seltzer tablet, put the lid on and place the canister on the floor with the lid side down. Wait about 10 seconds and whoosh! Your rocket should fly into the air.

    * Mad Scientist Party Games *

  • Scientist Anagrams. Muddle up the names of scientists and get the kids to work them out.
  • Mini Molecules. Before the party, take very close up pictures of everyday items, give the kids magnifying glasses and see if they can guess what they are.
  • Treasure hunt. Send the kids on a treasure hunt. Make the clues slightly cryptic by using mathematical formulas and scientific words which are appropriate for their age e.g. 40+5-2 is the number of steps forward before your next clue; Your next clue is where you might find H2O in the yard; What did Alexandra Graham Bell invent?.
  • Burst the Atoms. Blow up two balloons (atoms) for each guest and tie one to each of their ankles. Let the mayhem begin as the mad scientist race round the room trying to burst each others atoms but at the same time trying to preserve their own. The scientist who manages to preserve the last atom is the winner.
  • Piņata Having a piņata is always a great success at kids parties. For a large selection of piņatas and fillers, take a look at:
