Nursery Rhyme Party Theme

"I had never given a toddler party before. James just loved the nursery rhyme party. Me too!"
A nursery rhyme theme party is perfect for toddlers and preschool kids. Most younger kids will be familiar with some nursery rhymes so this party is perfect as it provides a familiar theme that they will be comfortable with.

* Nursery Rhyme Party Invitations *
If you want to make your own invitations, you will find stacks of nursery rhyme images on the internet. Alternatively, cut out pictures from kids comics and stick them on card.

* Nursery Rhyme Party Costumes *
Ask parents and/or kids to come dressed up as a nursery rhyme character. Alternatively you could dress up and give the kids a little nursery rhyme party badge when they arrive.

* Nursery Rhyme Party Decorations *
Start with the familiar things like balloons and streamers and then add anything connected to nursery rhymes.
You could have different areas of the room set up for different rhymes such as "Little Bo Peep Corner" with some cuddly toy sheep or "Humpty Dumpty Corner" with a cuddly Humpty Dumpty propped up on a low wall (painted cardboard box) or how about "Hickory Dickory Dock Corner" with a poster of a clock on the wall and a little toy mouse that the kids can play with or even "Little Miss Muffet's Corner" with a doll on a chair and a spider hanging above her on a string. In fact just pick the rhymes that you and your little one know and you can't go wrong.
Music will be very important so get all your nursery rhyme music tapes and CD's sorted out or borrow from friends and family if necessary. Alternatively I can recommend the ones below.

* Nursery Rhyme Party food *
Don't go overboard with the food as little kids may well not eat much although their parents might!
Go for finger foods that are not too messy and then have a cake at the end. For drinks I would suggest min cartons with straws as these are less easy to spill and are the right size for little hands to hold. Get parents to write the child name on the carton as invariably they get put down after a sip or two.
Finger Food ideas:
Jam Tarts – "Queen of Hearts"
Serve drinks from a teapot –“I’m a Little Teapot”
Hard Boiled Eggs with "Hunpty Dumpty's" face drawn on them
Star Shaped Cookies – "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"
Mini Fruit filled Pies – "Little Jack Horner"
Mini meat pies – "Simple Simon"
Raw fruit and vegetable pieces/sticks
Mini sausages
Cheese cubes
Crackers
Cheese straws
Mini fromage frais
Nursery Rhyme Cake Prepare a basic cake using a packet cake mix or my all-in-one cake recipe. Bake in a nursery rhyme character shaped tin and then frost with your favourite flavoured frosting.

Wishing Well
Borrow and ornamental garden wishing well and have the kids throw a plastic star inside and at the same time to make a wish. Or you could have the kids fish for the stars/fish using homemade rods with magnets on the end. You'll need to stick some mini magnets on whatever they are fishing for as well.
Find Bo Peep's sheep
Hide some toy sheep around the party area and have the kids help Bo Peep find them. You could have an adult dressed as Bo Peep and she could lead the children round.
Musical Stars
Play this like musical chairs but instead of chairs use large star shapes that you place on the floor. The children dance around to music and when the music stops, they must go and stand on a star. Last one on a star goes out of the game but gets small sticker. Last one left in the game gets a small prize.
Incy Wincy Spider
Teach the kids the hand movements to "Incy Wincy Spider".
Jack and Jill's Pails
If the weather is nice, set up a paddling pool with lots of pails of water.
Dancing Games
Sing and dance to traditional games such as "Ring a Roses", "Hokey Cokey", "The Farmers in the Dell" or "The Wheels on the Bus".
Humpty Dumpty's Egg and Spoon
The children are each given a spoon with a hard boiled egg on it (Put Humpty face on it first!) and they have to see how far they can walk across the room without dropping it. For older kids, you could add a few obstacles to go round such as a chair or box.
Jack's Candlestick
Place a long candle on the floor and have the kids stand in a line behind it. Everyone sings "Jack be Nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over the…." and all the children shout "CANDLESTICK" and then the first child jumps over the candle as far as they can go.
Little Miss Muffet
Sit the kids in a circle and have one of them hold a spider on a string. As the kids sing "Little Miss Muffet" the child holding the spider walks round the outside of the circle and then at the end of the song, drops it next to someone. That child then has to jump up and try and catch the other child before they sit back down in the empty space in the circle.

Did you know………………Most nursery rhymes were created in previous centuries and they came from historical events or situations. "Jack and Jill" however is not at all political and is in fact part of celebratory tradition. During the festivities, people took turns trying to jump over a lighted candle. If you extinguished the flame, you would have bad luck for a year, but if the candle remained lit, then you would have good luck for a year.
