Magic Theme Birthday Party Ideas

Magic Series - smoke and mirrors

Why settle for an ordinary party when you can give your child a magical birthday? A magic themed birthday party is not only fun, it's easy to do when you follow these suggestions.

Magic is the perfect theme party for children ages five and up. If your boy or girl is an aspiring magician then add little bit of hocus-pocus to create a memorable party.

Magical Decor

For older children's parties, try to create a spooky effect by lowering the lights. Use a few Halloween special effects too. A fog machine and black lights will help give the party a magical feel. Try hanging light weight props from the ceiling with clear thread to give the illusion that things are floating in air.

Decorate the table with inexpensive plastic top hats. Stuff them with purple and gold noisemakers, streamers, tissues and toy bunny rabbits. Use colorful magic themed tablecloths, napkins and cups to create a visually exciting party table.

Moon and star decals along with playing cards are a great way to carry the magic theme to the walls and even the ceilings. Add a bit of mystery with some magical music. The soundtracks to the Harry Potter movies are great for creating a magical mood.

Party Favors

Use plastic top hats as goody bags. Fill the hats with candy and inexpensive magic tricks and playing cards. Let the birthday child demonstrate the tricks for the guests and help them learn how to do them.

Activities

With a couple of wooden dowels from the local hardware store and some glue, poster paint, sparkles and other decorations the kids will have a great time creating their very own magic wands.

Break out some crayons, magic markers and stickers. The children will have a great time creating their very own magic posters on inexpensive newsprint.

Create a magical scavenger hunt by hiding playing cards all around the party area. Award a prize to the child that can find the most playing cards and another prize to the child who can find the jokers.

Put On a Show!

Hiring a professional birthday magician is a great way to make your magic themed party come to life. Look for a magician who specializes in children's birthday parties. Not every magician can entertain kids so be sure to ask the performer for references. If a full-time professional magician is not available or out of your price range then consider hiring a local teenager. Many young magicians can put on a terrific show at a lower price than a full-time professional, but many lack the experience of working in front of an excited bunch of children. Try to see the magician you are thinking about hiring perform live in front of kids before you book the show.

If the birthday child loves to perform magic encourage him or her to put on a show for the party. Be sure to help your child practice and rehearse the show. Try to limit your child's little magic show to just a handful of tricks.

Many traditional birthday party games can be given a magic theme with just a few modifications. Instead of pin the tail on the donkey why not play in detail on the bunny? You can easily make up the props using a large piece of poster board and some cotton balls.

Party Invitations

Set the mood and the expectations for the party with a magic themed birthday party invitation. With some construction paper, scissors, glue and magic markers your child can create a cute bunny rabbit in a top hat invitation. Cut out the shape of a top hat in dark purple or black construction paper and a bunny rabbit silhouette with white paper. Cut a slit in the top hat that permits the bunnys ears to poke out. Write the party details on the body of the bunny rabbit and tuck the bunny inside the hat. The invitee can read the invitation by pulling the bunny rabbit out of the hat.

At a few drops of food coloring to ordinary fruit juice to transform a healthy drink into a magic potion. Carry the magic theme over to the birthday cake by building a cake shaped like a bunny rabbit or by decorating a traditional cake with a top hat and candles.

As a general rule, don't invite more kids than you can safely supervise. That means the younger the children are the fewer you should invite. If you're inviting very young kids be sure that a parent stays at the party.

A magic theme party is a great way to make your child's birthday a magical experience.
