* Space Party Theme Party Decorations *
This is the fun part. You could either decorate the room to look like the inside of a space ship or to resemble a planet. Try and have a colour theme such as blue and silver or black and white rather than lots of rainbow colours. Below are some ideas:
Posters of astronauts, space shuttles and planets.
Paint polystyrene balls of all sizes and hang them from the ceiling using fishing line.
Have a Launch pad area sealed off with warning tape and if you can create a rocket out of cardboard boxes as a centerpiece
Create a big sign to put over the entrance saying something like: "Space Mission Control Center – WARNING: Authorized Access ONLY!"
Suspend alien heads around the room made out of green balloons and with eyes drawn on them in black felt pen.
Create a space ship control panel. Take a large cardboard box and cover with silver foil or spray paint in silver. Make a number of small holes in one side and push some Christmas tree lights through the holes. Use lights that are different colors and which twinkle as they are more effective. Also make some larger holes and insert camera film canisters so they resemble knobs and buttons Attach the control panel to the wall unless you want lots of little hands playing with it!
Night Sky: Paint the inside of a large cardboard box black. On the base lightly draw a plan of the stars of the night sky including the famous star constellations such as "The Plough" and "The Big Bear". Make some small holes where the stars should be and insert small twinkling white Christmas tree lights – one light in each hole. At the entrance to the box hang over it a large thick black cloth so there is no light coming into the box apart from the 'stars'. Place the box at head height for the kids and have them take turns to place their head under the cloth in the box so they can see the twinkling night sky.
Have silver and white balloons all over the floor. You could even put glow in the dark items in each balloon before blowing up.

* Space Party Theme Food *
Decorate the table with a tablecloth color to match your theme eg silver, white, blue etc and then place balls of scrunched up silver foil amongst the food plates to resemble moon rocks. Suspend flying saucer paper plates from the ceiling.
Moon rocks: Mini meat balls on skewers
Flying Saucer Pizzas
Planet Burgers: Hamburgers with all the fillings
Re-hydration Fluid: Juices and soft drinks
Space Shakes: Flavored Milk shakes
Fizz Bomb Shakes: Pepsi or coke with a scoop of ice-cream floating on top
Buy Real NASA Space Food!
– just add water! This is the real thing and the kids will love it.
Planet Cupcakes: Cupcakes decorated with coloured frosting – yellow for Saturn, Venus and Pluto, orange for Mercury, red for Mars, brown for Earth, green for Uranus
Shooting Stars: Star shaped cookies
Mini Mars Bars
Sherbet Spaceships
More Moon Rocks: Caramelised popcorn
Planet Cake Prepare a basic cake using a packet cake mix or my all-in-one cake recipe. Place the mixture in a basin mould and bake as per the instructions. When cooked and cooled, cover with brown or green frosting. Make the surface look a bit rough rather like the surface of the moon. Dot with small plastic spacemen figures and stick a flag on top with the birthday child’s name and age. A quick and easy peasy cake!

Rocket launch.
Method 1: Fill a small plastic film canister (the white ones work best) with one teaspoon of water. Quickly add one Alka-Seltzer tablet, put the lid on and place the canister on the floor with the lid side down. STAND WELL BACK. Wait about 10 seconds and whoosh! Your rocket should fly into the air.
Method 2: Put a small amount of baking soda (make it slightly moist with a few drops of water) in the dip on the inside cap of the film canister. Place a dessertspoon of vinegar in the canister and replace the lid taking care the baking soda doesn't fall out. Place the canister, lid side down on the ground and stand back. STAND WELL BACK. Wait a few seconds and then watch it shoot into the sky.
Apollo 13: "Houston - We've Got A Problem" - The Space Store have a great collection of DVD's and Videos which the kids will be fascinated by. Great for when you are are waiting for all the gests to arrive or to play in the background.
Create a Jet Pack: Beforehand collect as many empty cereal boxes as you have kids. Cover with plain black paper or silver foil and attach 2 pieces of elastic on one of the larger sides so as it resembles a backpack. Have the kids decorate their own jet pack with silver and gold stars and stickers. They can use the jet packs to store any treat and prizes they win during the party.

Flying Saucers Create a black hole by spray painting a large box black. Hang it from the ceiling or a somewhere outside and have the kids throw Frisbees and try and get them into the black hole. Most Frisbees in the hole wins.
Hunt the Alien
Split into small teams. Tell the kids that an alien is hiding and it's their job to locate him. You have been sent a map of where he might be hiding by Mission control and their job is to locate him.
Piñata
Having a piñata is usually a big hit at kids parties. Check out these stores for space pinatas
Moon Rock Hunt
Paint some small rocks with glow in the dark paint. Make the room as dark as possible and have the kids collect as many rocks as they can. Alternatively you could cover the rocks in silver foil.
Moon Walkers
In advance spray paint black some empty tin cans – 2 cans for each team/child. Carefully make 2 holes in the bottom equidistant from each other and then thread a 2 meter long piece of string through both holes and then tie the ends. You should now have a tin can with a large loop of string which should be about 1 meter long. Have the kids step onto the cans (1 for each foot) and hold onto the loops of string. Then they must walk around a course as quickly as possible. If in teams have each team member do it and the first team to complete the course is the winner.
Floating In Space
Split into pairs or teams. Give each team a bowl full of cotton wool balls plus an empty bowl and a spoon. Blindfold a member of each team and on the word "GO" they have to see how many balls they can transfer from one bowl to the other within 30 seconds. It is very funny to watch because the cotton wool balls are so light that they are not sure if they are picking any up or not.
