that my kids could really do."

All the following Easter party craft ideas are designed for kids to make. They are all fairly easy although some will need some adult supervision.

You will probably have most of the bits and pieces needed already at home and what's more they are all fun and the finished products look really great.

    How to blow an Egg

    1. Wash and dry the egg. NB Choose white eggs if you are going to paint them.
    2. Using a darning needle, carefully puncture a small hole at the pointed end of the egg (A). Puncture another slightly larger hole at the other end of the egg (B), making sure that you puncture the yolk as well.
    3. Over a bowl, blow (you might have to blow quite hard!) through the small hole until you have expelled all of the white and the yolk.
    4. Carefully wash the egg shell and dry thoroughly.

    Different types of egg dye

    Natural
    Ingredients:

  • Various coloured food and plant items e.g. beetroot, coffee, saffron, grass, berries.
  • Saucepan for each colour
  • Cooking oil

  • For each colour, pour 1/2 - 1 cup of water into a saucepan and add the chopped up fruit or plant products. Bring to the boil and then let simmer until the desired colour is obtained. Let the dyed water cool and then add the eggs (already hard-boiled or blown). Let the eggs sit until they turn the colour that you want. Remove them from the dye and when fully dry, polish then with a soft cloth and a little cooking oil.

    Food colouring
    Ingredients:

  • Food colouring
  • Hot water
  • White vinegar
  • Cooking oil

  • For each colour, place 1/4 teaspoon of food colouring in a small bowl. Add 3/4 cup of hot water and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar. Add the eggs (hard-boiled or blown) and let them sit until they turn the colour that you want. Remove from the dye and when fully dry, polish then with a soft cloth and a little cooking oil.

    Crepe paper dye
    Ingredients:

  • Different coloured crepe paper
  • Hot water
  • Cooking oil

  • Tear up large pieces/strips of crepe paper and soak each colour in individual bowls of hot water. Add the eggs (hard-boiled or blown) and let them sit until they turn the colour that you want. Remove from the dye and when fully dry, polish then with a soft cloth and a little cooking oil.

    Artistic Eggs

    Equipment:

  • White Eggs - Hard boiled or blown
  • Dye - Natural, Food colouring, Crepe paper.
  • White crayon
  • Rubber Bands
  • Masking tape
  • Stickers of different shapes
  • Any of the methods below will give really stunning results that even small children can do. For younger children it might be easier to use hard-boiled eggs rather than the blown ones. Before putting the egg in the dye get the kids to do any of the following: Draw a pattern or shape on the egg using the white crayon. Wrap one or more rubber bands around the egg. Use masking tape to block off sections of the egg that you don't want to colour. Place stickers on the egg on the sections that you don't want to colour.

Then place the egg in the dye and leave for several minutes until the egg has absorbed sufficient colour. Remove from the dye and allow to dry. Remove the masking tape, rubber bands etc and either leave the egg as it is or the kids can repeat the whole process again but using different coloured dye.

TIP: If you are creating a multicoloured Easter egg, it is best to start with the lightest colour dye first.

    Criss-cross Eggs

This Easter party idea makes great Easter decorations for hanging or putting in a basket.

    Equipment:

  • Small oval shaped balloons
  • Liquid starch or fabric stiffener
  • Scissors
  • Different coloured embroidery thread or wool
  • Blow up the balloons to the size of Easter egg that you want and tie the ends. Cut 12 -24 inch lengths of thread or wool and soak them in the liquid starch or fabric stiffener for a couple of minutes. Then carefully remove the threads and squeeze off any excess liquid with your thumb and forefinger. Wrap the threads one at a time, in a criss-cross manner around the balloons. You don't need to cover the balloons entirely but put just enough threads to evenly cover the surface.

Tie an extra piece of dry thread around the neck of each balloon and hang them to dry in a warmish place. When completely dry, burst each balloon with a pin and pull the balloon through one of the holes in the weave. Either hang the Easter eggs up as decorations or place them in a basket or bowl.

    Paper Animal Baskets

This Easter party idea is just so cute and the baskets look really great filled with small chocolate eggs or candy. The instructions here are to make an Easter party basket about 3 inch square.

    Equipment:

  • Coloured paper (thick) or thin card A4 size
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Pencil
  • Trimmings e.g. ribbon, buttons, sequins
  • Shredded coloured paper or cellophane
  • Small chocolate eggs or candy
  • Fold the paper in half along its width and then open it out and lay it with the pleat fold uppermost. Bring the left-hand side of the paper to the centrefold and press. Repeat with the right-hand side. Close the paper along the centre-fold and your paper should now be folded into four with the pleats all running in the same direction.

Draw a picture on the paper e.g. chick, egg, rabbit and make sure that the design touches both pleated edges of the paper. Also add a small tab approximately 1 inch long, at the bottom of the design. Carefully cut our your design, open it out and fold each tab towards the centre. From a spare piece of card, cut out a 3 inch square plus an extra tab. Use the tab and some glue to join up the two open sides of your design. It should now be box shaped. Place the square inside your Easter basket and glue each tab to its underside.

Decorate your easter party basket with ribbons, stickers or whatever you want. When all the glue is fully dry, put a little shredded paper in the bottom of the basket and top with chocolate eggs. Simply great.

TIP: If the card is quite flimsy it might be easier to attach the decorations before you assemble the basket.

    Make an Easter Basket

These Easter baskes require a little bit of dexterity plus adult supervision but they are great for using up those left over plastic drinks bottles which you have been storing just in case!

    Equipment:

  • 2 litre plastic drinks bottle
  • Coloured paper or thin card
  • Length of string
  • Craft knife
  • Chalk
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Hole punch
  • Glue
  • Using the craft knife, cut around the bottom third of the drinks bottle - this will be the basis of your basket. Measure the diameter of your basket with a piece of string and use this to measure strips of paper/card 1.5 times the length of the string and 1-cm wide.

Using the chalk, draw 1-cm wide vertical lines on your basket all the way round. Cut these lines with the craft knife going from top to bottom. Take one strip of coloured paper and starting from the base of your basket, attach it to one of the basket strips with a little glue (A).

When the glue is fully dry you are now ready to start weaving. Weave the piece of coloured paper in and out of the basket strips until you have gone right round the basket (B). Trim off any excess paper and glue down the loose end. Take another strip of coloured paper and glue this to an adjacent basket strip and just above the first paper strip. When the glue is dry, weave in and out as before. Repeat with the other paper strips.

To make the handle, puncture 2 holes opposite each other and at the top of the basket and then thread through the pipe cleaner, twisting the ends to secure them. You can then decorate it with ribbons, fill it with eggs or little cotton ball chicks.

Tip If you prefer to have a more multi color basket, paint the outside of the basket base before cutting the vertical lines.

    Little Miss Bonnets

Most little girls just love to dress up and these Easter bonnets will surely put a smile on their face especially when they have made them themselves.

    Equipment:

  • Large strong paper plate
  • 30 inch length of ribbon
  • Hole punch
  • Strong glue
  • Hat decorations e.g. feathers, paper/dried flowers, bows, lace, glitter, paints
  • Punch two holes in the rim of the plate and opposite each other. Thread the ribbon through one hole, along the top of the plate and down through the other hole. Now, using your imagination, decorate the bonnets making them as bright and creative, as you like.

When all the glue items are fully dry, 'Little Miss' is ready to parade her beautiful Easter bonnet!

    Easter Bunnies

These are really cute Easter party idea and a great craft idea for the younger kids although they will need some help.

    Equipment:

  • 1 x Large paper plate
  • 1 x Small paper plate
  • Stapler
  • White and pink craft paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Paint, marker pens or crayons
  • Decorations eg stick on eyes, ribbons
  • Coloured wool for whiskers
  • Cotton wool ball
  • Start by stapling the two plates together at one edge. The smaller plate will be the head and the larger plate the body. Cut out 2 large ears from the white craft paper and 2 slightly smaller ones from the pink paper. Glue a pink ear onto each white ear and then staple them to the top of the bunny head. Cut out some feet and staple them to the base of the body. Cut a small triangle from the pink paper and stick that on for the nose, draw a mouth and glue on strands of wool as whiskers.

You could either draw on eyes or use stick on ones and the kids can have fun adding bows, ribbons or whatever they wish to give their bunny its own character.

Finally glue on a cotton wool ball to make a tail and your bunny will be ready to hip hop away.

    Cotton tail Necklace

These necklaces are so simple to make yet the kids just seem to love them. Put them with an Easter bonnet and the girls will be thrilled.

    Equipment:

  • Coloured cotton wool balls
  • Length of embroidery thread
  • Darning needle
  • Rabbit pictures cut from a magazine
  • Card
  • Glue
  • Start by getting the kids to tear out small pictures of rabbits from scrap magazines. Roughly cut around the pictures and then glue them to the card. When the glue is fully dry, cut out the rabbits and then punch a small hole at the head end.

Measure a length of thread to the length of necklace that you want and using the darning needle let the kids thread on the cotton wool balls. When they are halfway, thread on the rabbit and then finish with more cotton wool balls. Tie the end and there you have a really pretty cotton tail necklace.
